Eventually, (probably in about 10 years) Disney will inevitably look at rebooting the original Star Wars Trilogy. While they're at it, I sort of hope that they fix the prequels as well (Hopefully they just animate those in the style of the Clone Wars, with the same voice cast from Clone Wars... because while some of the performances were really good, there is just no salvaging others.)
Anyway, just for the hell of it, I'm going to toss out my suggestions for recasting the OT in about 10 years...
So, let's get going.
I feel no need to explain either one of these, but my recommendation would be for a voice over or motion capture role... No one needs to trudge through the hot sun in that hot suit.
R2D2 - No one.
I mean occasionally caption some of his beeps for fun, but that's it. We have actual robots that can move the way he did... just program the thing to roll and remote control the rest of the action by someone with a joystick.
Obi Wan -
Have Ewan McGregor come back. Even though I don't like to think about the prequel movies, He was actually one of the highlights, and the character model from Clone wars already looks and sound like him anyway.
Hell the last of the prequels is 20 years before A new hope right? So it will have been over 20 years since McGregor played that version of him on film. Just let him play the older wiser version as well and it will still fit in without any issues.
Ok, So as noted, I'm going to pick from actors today that will be able to look the part ten years from now. In the case of Luke and Leia, this means I need to look at actual teenagers, so they could potentially still play 20 somethings over a decade down the road.
So I'm going to skew young here but not too young. Don't get me wrong, someone like Dane Dehaan or Freddie Hghmore could nail the role of Luke today, but as far as nailing it ten years from now, probably not...
So... Levi Miller comes to mind immediately. He's proven his talents in Wrinkle in Time and in Pan (Even though Pan sort of sucked, his performance was not at fault for that) and right now he's basically what, like 16? I'd totally count on him to grow into exactly the type of star that could carry the franchise with action star moves, but adventure starved farmboy naivete.
This one presents the same issue... They'd need an actress who can still play a 20 year old, ten years form now. As much as I wish that I could say Elle Fanning WILL age that well, I just can't know that for sure. Hence the choice of Kiernan Shipka... If you don't know who that is yet, just wait to see how she does in the new Sabrina series.
She's 19 right now, but she looks hella young, and I'm pretty sure she'll still look young in 10 years. Usually she's blonde but you could either dye her hair brown, or dont... Luke was sandy blonde already and they are meant to be twins right? (Millie Bobbie Brown is the second choice.)
Also, please this time around, give her a little extra focus. Leia is technically more of a badass than Luke. When we meet her, she is already an established rebel with leadership responsibilities. Her planet gets destroyed right off, and she stands up to torture without losing her attitude, all before she proceeds to rescue herself in the middle of the boys botching it, then she rescues them... and that's just in the first installment.
Leia is a badass, give her as much spotlight as you give Han and Luke.
Vader - Ray Park and James Earl Jones
I wouldn't usually care who is under the mask so long as they keep the original voice work of James Earl Jones. (It's not like we get to see his mouth move with the mask on or like his voice is the same without it.) but there is someone who knows his way around a lightsaber duel that I actually think would make a great version of mask-less Vader by Return of the Jedi... Ray Park.
That's right, cast Darth Maul, as Darth Vader. It's a great fit, and he would get to face off against Ewan McGregor again. It would be awesome. Trust me.
You may be noticing a trend here... If their face doesn't show, then I recommend re-using the existing audio. They could just cast any big guy who can move under the suit, or mo-cap someone on stilts, but I actually think that since Joonas Suotamo has already been doing such a fine job lately, that it might be good to just let him keep doing it.
Moff Tarkin - Peter Capaldi
Ok, so anyone who sees this will likely want someone like Ralph Fiennes, but I have this funny little idea about another Doctor Who actor playing the role (Cushing played Doctor who in the theatrical movie btw). Besides, just look at him. If not him, then Julian Richings would do well too...
I just really like the idea of Cushi.... I mean Capaldi.
Beil organna -
Yes I know, he wasn't in the original trilogy, but I would have Jimmy Smitts reprise the role just so there could be 1 scene, 1 FREAKING SCENE, on Alderan before, or as, it blows up.
It's a whole planet destroyed, Leia's HOME! Give the audience some emotional attachment for crying out loud! Alderan's destruction should be more meaningful than the deaths of Owen and Beru...
Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru - Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse
... If they played them young well enough before, then I just prefer to hold to that. I don't need them to look like they aged 40 years in the span of 20 even if they do live hard lives out there in the desert. Maybe if they're younger then I would have more empathy for their tragic deaths... Or you could give Edgerton the chance to go out fighting, onscreen.
